After 20 Years - A Long-awaited Historical Art Event “STORM RIDERS COMICS & ART EXHIBITION 2001”

KUALA LUMPUR, 01 Dec. - The first ever Storm Riders Comics & Art Exhibition 2001 which was held at KL Plaza from 29 November till 4 December 2001, was made possible with the cooperation of Jonesky Limited, the Hong Kong company which produces Storm Riders comics; The One Academy, a private higher education institution offering courses in art & design and Evergreen Publisher, a local publishing company. The much-awaited exhibition was also made possible with the collaboration of other partners namely, Sin Chew Jit Poh, Sinchew-I and Redi-988.



The exhibition, launched by Ma Wing Shing, Chief Executive of Jonesky Limited, Hong Kong, was aimed at bringing the world of art and comics closer to youths who are interested in this line. Besides that, the exhibition will also be able to expose to the fans on the drawing methods and allow them to appreciate the art of comics drawing, especially to those who intend to make a career out of their passion.

In his speech, Tatsun Hoi, Principal and Managing Director of The One Academy, said, the individual who has the fire of enthusiasm, the passion to succeed and the desire to follow his/her dream will be able to reach the height as a creative professional, just like Mr. Ma Wing Shing!

“It has also been The One Academy's principle to train their students through practical expertise: to become a master, you have to learn from the master. By bringing Mr. Ma to Malaysia, the academy hopes that its students and the general public as well, will be able to learn from the master of the trade.”

“Storm Riders, also known as Pedang Setiawan in Malay and Fong Yun in Mandarin, is the best-selling comics series since it was published 12 years ago. Its popularity is not contained within Hong Kong alone but in other Asia Pacific continents as well. The comics series have also been translated into several other languages to suit the local fans,” explains Poon Chee Kin, Managing Director of Evergreen Publisher.

In line with its objectives, various programmes have been lined up to increase the awareness and interest among all the visitors. Those interested in art and comics will be able to participate in workshops conducted by The One Academy's illustrators. Other programme highlights include caricature demonstrations and sale of Storm Riders limited edition merchandise such as t-shirts, posters and other souvenirs.

“There are more than 40 items of limited edition souvenirs which are specially imported from Hong Kong,” says Poon Wai Mun, Executive Director of Evergreen Publisher.

A variety of original artwork exhibited were flown in from Hong Kong which was used for Storm Riders comics books as well as covers.

At the press conference later, Ma Wing Shing said that to be a successful writer and comics artist, besides having an imaginative and creative idea, he or she should hard working as well as possess strong determination.

The One Academy Comics & Art Camp for Teens 2001

Intro :

The camp is open to all secondary school students between the ages of 13 and 19. Participants will be taught by professionals who have vast experience in the industry. Among the programmes held will be step-by-step art technique, comic-drawing, comics demonstration and creative & practical projects. All participants will receive a special invitation to attend the Comics & Art Seminar/Forum 2001 which will be held on 2 December 2001.
