The One Academy once again carved their mark in three out of four categories at Art Square Group's Peraduan Bakat Baru Komik Malaysia 2009.

The winners were announced during the 100% Gempakstar 2009 Carnival organized by Art Square Group, publisher of Gempak comic magazines.


Malaysian Artist Award (MEA)
Gan Chin Lee

Illustration lecturer Gan Chin Lee won himself the inaugural Malaysian Artist (MEA) Award, an art award cum exhibition jointly organized by Gallery Chandran art activist group, House of Matahati (HOM) and Soka Gakkai Malaysia with the aim of supporting young, talented artists in the local art scene.

Gan also won an Honorable Mention for his masterpiece 'Harmony Street' in the 14th Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition held in Taichung City, Taiwan.


National Manga Competition 2009
Amateur Category, Third Prize

The One Academy graduate Yap Zhuo Yu's inspiring comic artwork garnered
him third place in the National Manga Competition 2009, as well as a cash prize of RM 500.

Yap said he took almost 2 months to complete his artwork and is based on the storyline of a thriller. "I try to bring in the 'dark mood' into the comic to enhance the horror atmosphere, so that is what makes my work different than the others."

Open to all Malaysian talents, the first-time event held across the nation was divided into three main categories: amateur, secondary school students and primary school students. The competition aims to provide a wider exposure of Japanese comic book art to a larger audience, regardless of age.


Autodesk Asia Pacific Animation Challenge Hong Kong

Two teams from The One Academy were sent to represent Malaysia in this challenge cum cum 4-day animation boot camp, holding their own against 11 teams hailing from across Asia.

The first runners-up with award-winning animation My Telatori were the team of Chin Kuan Win, Julian Chai and Yow Han Chong. Second runners-up were Loh Yong Kang, Tan Guo Xiang and Teh Beng Eu with their film Nature’s Roar.

Speaking on behalf of the team, Loh said it was their first time participating in an animation competition, and thus felt happy and excited to know that the team’s hard work paid off.

All teams were trained under the mentorship of industry professionals from Lucasfilm Animation Singapore, Imagi Studio, Rhythm & Hues Studio and Rising Sun Pictures.

The One Academy wowed an international panel of judges to sweep the top three awards of the 11th TBS DigiCon6 Digital Contest “Animation & Movie” Awards.

First place was bagged by ‘Still Alive’ with its humorous portrayal of Chinese vampires; second place went to ‘My Telatori’ (My Territory) and third prize was grabbed by the short animation ‘Nature’s Roar’.

Managed and jointly organized by Tokyo Broadcasting System, Inc. and TBS DigiCon6 Headquarters, the DigiCon6 Awards rewards passionate and talented digital artists for their outstanding work of art. This competition allows creators the chance to explore, express and expand themselves creatively in creating short films for the digital age.
